The film is about the gangster James J. Bulger and his gang, which had involved with drug trafficking, murder, gambling, extortion, money laundering, etc. in the 70s and 80s. They are hostile to the Italian Mafia La Cosa Nostra and Bulger becomes an informer for the FBI (John Connolly) to grab them. There is the condition that Bulger does not start another murder. But Bulger doesnt stick to this rules and so his FBI agent covers him. So here is played on both sides a wrong game ...
Johnny Depp plays the brutal gangster boss Bulger with urgently intensity. Sometimes you have problems assigning all the names correctly. Otherwise, this is a successful, hard thriller and a multi-layered character study. Of course the topic is nothing new. This kind of film has been seen often. Therefore only 3 points.
Der Film handelt von dem Gangster James J. Bulger und seiner Gang die mit Drogenhandel, Mord, Glücksspiel, Erpressung, Geldwäsche usw. in den 70er und 80er Jahren zutun hatte. Sie sind verfeindet mit der italienischen Mafia La Cosa Nostra und Bulger wird Informant für das FBI (John Connolly) um diese zu schnappen. Dabei gibt es die Bedingung, dass Bulger keinen weiteren Mord anzettelt. Dies hält er nicht ein und sein FBI- Agent, deckt ihn. Hier wird also auf beiden Seiten ein falsches Spiel gespielt...
Johnny Depp spielt mit eindringlicher Intensität den brutalen Gangster-Boss Bulger. Mitunter hat man Probleme all die Namen richtig zuzuordnen. Ansonsten ist dies ein gelungener, harter Thriller und eine vielschichtige Charakterstudie. Natürlich ist das Thema nichts neues. Diese Art von Film hat man schon etliche Male gesehen. Deshalb nur 3 Punkte.
