Ivan, a Danish pastor, housed in his parish a few probation offenders. Adam, a neo-Nazi, is added as a new and collides with his unadorned, sober worldview with Ivan's unconditional optimism. When asked what Adam imagines to afford for the group, he replies that he will bake an apple pie. Adam should now take care of the apple tree in front of the church, but it is afflicted by several catastrophes, which are equally to be found in Ivan`s life. Their extent Ivan isn't able to vizualise and he displaces the truth with euphemism rhetoric. But Adam comes on the track and faces Ivan with reality by metaphors from the Book of Job. Ivan faints and questioned for the first time the meaning of his life.

A very great movie! Must see! Very funny! Very intelligent!

Ivan, ein dänischer Pfarrer, beherbergt in seiner Pfarrei Bewährungs-Straftäter. Adam, ein Neonazi, kommt als neuer hinzu und prallt mit seiner ungeschönten, nüchternen Weltsicht mit dem bedingungslosen Optimismus von Ivan aneinander. Auf die Frage, was Adam sich vorstellt für die Gruppe leisten zu können, antwortet er, er wird einen Apfelkuchen backen. Adam soll sich nun um den Apfelbaum vor der Kirche kümmern, doch dieser wird von mehreren Katastrophen heimgesucht, die ebenso in Ivan`s Leben zu finden sind, deren Ausmaß Ivan sich aber nicht stellt und mit Euphemismus-Rhetorik verdrängt. Doch Adam kommt ihm auf die Spur und konfrontiert Ivan mit der bitteren Wahrheit übermittelt durch Metaphern aus dem Hiob-Buch. Ivan fällt in Ohnmacht und zweifelt zum ersten mal an dem Sinn seines Lebens.

Ein ganz großer Film! Unbedingt anschauen! Sehr witzig! Sehr intelligent!

Rough, unsecured portrait of paramedic night shifts in the ghettos of New York.

Frank gets pursued by the spirits of the dead, he could not revive and feels like a death angel. Lack of sleep, overtime and constant stress make him a sick zombie who keeps up with vodka and coffee during the night shifts. He asks for immediate termination, but must continue to work. Then he meets Mary, the daughter of a deathly ill patient, she also struggles with her life. Both fall in love. Frank, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, gets involved with a drug dealer and experienced a horror trip. He remembers his failure at Rose's revival. Mary also takes drugs again.

A very successful film. The frantic night ambulance rides, accentuated by an excellent
soundtrack and the ingenious camera are creating an image of an ecstasy-flash. In particular, the talks between the driver and passenger are brisk, tough and brilliant. A masterpiece!

Rauhes, ungeschöntes Abbild der Rettungssanitäter-Nachtschichten in den Ghettos von New York.

Frank wird von den Geistern der Toten verfolgt, die er nicht wiederbeleben konnte und fühlt sich als Todesengel. Schlafmangel, Überstunden und Dauerstress machen aus ihm einen kranken Zombie, der sich mit Wodka und Kaffee während der Nachtschichten bei der Stange hält. Er bittet um sofortige Kündigung, doch muss weiterarbeiten. Dann lernt er Mary kennen, die Tochter eines todkranken Patienten, welche ebenfalls mit dem Leben hadert. Beide verlieben sich. Frank, am Rande des Nervenzusammenbruchs, lässt sich auf einen Drogendealer ein und erlebt einen Horrortrip. Er erinnert sich an sein Versagen bei Rose's Wiederbelebung. Auch Mary nimmt wieder Drogen.

Ein sehr gelungener Film. Die hektischen, nächtlichen Rettungswagen-Fahrten werden durch den exzellenten
Soundtrack und die geniale Kamera wie im Rausch dargestellt. Besonders die Gespräche zwischen Fahrer und Beifahrer sind flott, derb und genial. Ein Meisterwerk!
