The film begins in the youth of Ian Curtis and accompanies him to the first job as an employment agent until his gigs with the band Joy Division, which decisively initiated the post-punk in the UK. It is shown how he uses drugs and then suffers epileptic seizures. Too young, Ian married his girlfriend Debbie and now there is no room for affairs. He feels responsible to keep Debbie, who has already given birth to a daughter of him. Half-hearted, he makes an end with Annik, but at the end of the film we see an internally torn, desperate man ...

The performance in black and white and Sam Riley's music performance are outstanding. Boring, however, the typical rock'n roll clichés. The film loses itself in banalities and it is not considering the influences of songwriting. Much more is about the affair of Ian and in context his clinging wife. Also the doctors do not tell how it comes that Ian suddenly gets epilepsy. Is it because of the drug misuse, which is shown at the beginning of the film? Mediocre musician biography, which does not get stucked.

Der Film beginnt in der Jugend von Ian Curtis und begleitet ihn zum ersten Job als Arbeitsvermittler bis zu seinen Gigs mit der Band Joy Division, die den Post-Punk in Großbritannien entscheidend mitgestaltete. Es wird gezeigt, wie er Medikamente missbraucht und dann epileptische Anfälle leidet. Viel zu jung heiratet Ian seine Freundin Debbie und nun ist für Affären kein Platz mehr, wenn er Debbie behalten möchte, die indes schon eine Tochter von ihm geboren hat. Halbherzig macht er mit Annik Schluß, doch am Ende des Filmes sehen wir einen innerlich zerrissenen, verzweifelten Mann...

Hervorragend ist die Umsetzung in Schwarz-Weiß sowie Sam Rileys Musikperformance. Langweilig dagegen, die typischen Rock'n Roll Klischees. Der Film verliert sich in Banalitäten und es wird nicht bedacht, die Einflüsse des Songwritings zu betrachten. Viel mehr geht es um die Affäre von Ian und seine klammernde Frau. Auch erzählen die Ärzte nicht, wie es dazu kommt, dass Ian plötzlich Epilepsie bekommt. Liegt es an dem Medikamentenmissbrauch, der am Anfang des Filmes gezeigt wird? Mittelmäßige Musikerbiographie, die nicht hängenbleibt.
