John Wick

Der Actionfilm "John Wick" von Chad Stahelski aus dem Jahr 2014 und mit Keanu Reeves in der Hauptrolle handelt von einem ehemaligen Auftragskiller (John Wick), der einen brutalen Rachefeldzug führt, wegen dem Mord an seinem Hund, welcher das letzte Geschenk war seiner verstorbenen Frau.

Stilistisches Geballer und Gejage, kaum gut ausgearbeitete Charaktere. Trotzdem 5 von 5 Punkten, weil es wieder einmal so ein Film ist, der mich danach mit Seriösität verzaubert. Und natürlich weil er einfach sehr spannend ist!

The action film "John Wick" by Chad Stahelski from the year 2014 and with Keanu Reeves in the title role is about a former assassin (John Wick) leading a brutal campaign of revenge, because of the murder of his dog, who was the last gift of his deceased wife.

Stylistic banging and hunting, hardly well-developed characters. Nevertheless, 5 out of 5 points because it is once again a film that enchanted me with seriousness. And of course, because this movie is extremly thrilling!

Gilbert Grape

Der Film "Gilbert Grape - Irgendwo in Iowa" basiert auf einem Roman von Peter Hedges und wurde 1993 von Lasse Hallström gedreht. Der Film handelt von Gilbert Grape, der nach dem Suizid seines Vaters als Ersatzvater für seine Großfamilie einsteht, welche die Mutter aufgrund ihres enormen Übergewichts nicht mehr versorgen kann. Das ganze spielt sich in dem sehr belanglosen kleinen Ort  Endora (in Iowa) ab, dessen Hauptattraktion die alljährliche Wohnwagen-karawane ist, welche diesen Ort durchfährt. Ein Wohnwagen bleibt vorübergehend in Endora, wegen einer Autopanne und Gilbert lernt die sympathische Becky kennen. Gilbert arbeitet in einem kleinen Tante-Emma Laden, der unter der Konkurrenz des riesigen Supermarktes "Food Land" zu leiden hat und muss nahezu ununterbrochen seinen geistig behinderten Bruder Arnie beaufsichtigen. Sobald er diese Aufsicht unterbricht, begibt sich Arnie regelmäßig in Lebensgefahr, in dem er den Gastank hochklettert. Dies beansprucht Gilberts Geduld zunehmend und einmal sieht er sich dabei, wie er Arnie schlägt.

Mir hat der Film sehr gut gefallen. Absolut authentisch zeichnet Hallström hier ein Portrait einer armen Familie mit einem behinderten Jungen, der besonders professionell dargestellt wurde von Leonardo Dicaprio. Fünf von fünf Punkten!

The film "Whats eating Gilbert Grape" is based on a novel by Peter Hedges and directed by Lasse Hallström 1993. The film is about Gilbert Grape, who stands up after the suicide of his father as a surrogate father to his extended family, which can not provides by the mother due to their enormous preponderance. It takes place in the very insignificant small town Endora (somewhere in Iowa), whose main attraction is the annual trailer caravan, which travels through this place. One trailer remains temporarily in Endora, because of a breakdown and Gilbert gets introduced to Becky.
Gilbert is working in a small mom and pop shop that has suffered from the competition of the giant supermarket "Foodland" and must almost constantly supervise his mentally handicapped brother Arnie. Once he interrupts this oversight, Arnie regular resorts into critical condition, where he climbs up the water tank. This increasingly demands the patience of Gilbert and once he beats Arnie.

I liked the film very much. Hallström draws an absolut authentic picture of a poor family with a disabled boy who was professional represented by Leonardo DiCaprio - Overwhelming performance, indeed.

The Witches of Eastwick

Die Komödie "Die Hexen von Eastwick" von George Miller aus dem Jahr 1987 basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Roman von John Updike und handelt von drei Frauen - gespielt von Susan Sarandon, Cher und Michel Pfeiffer - die sich einen perfekten Mann herbeiwünschen und sich dabei ertappen übersinnliche Kräfte zu haben. Dieser Mann tritt in ihr Leben in Gestalt des teuflisch gut spielenden Jack Nicholson, der ihrer aller Leben neu disponiert. Doch wer ist dieser Mann eigentlich? Der Mann, an dessen Name sich erst einmal niemand erinnern kann. Und warum gelingt es ihm so gut die Frauen um den Finger zu wickeln?

Eine Horrorkomödie, die mit sehr viel Intelligenz startet und dann eher sich auf abenteuerliche Launen konzentriert. Vier von Fünf Sternen. Weiterzuempfehlen! Besonders auch wegen der Transformation der Figur Jane Spofford (Susan Sarandon) einfach köstlich!

Auch die schauspielerische Leistung von Veronika Cartwright ist zu loben!

The comedy "The Witches of Eastwick" by George Miller, which was shot in 1987 based on the novel by John Updike and is about three women - played by Susan Sarandon, Cher and Michel Pfeiffer - who desire a perfect man and figure out about themself having psychic powers. This man enters her life in the form of the devilishly good playing Jack Nicholson. From now on their lives were newly disposed. But who is this man really? The man, whose name once no one can remember. And why he's kind of magic smooth operator?

A horror comedy that starts with a lot of intelligence and then more focused on adventurous whims. Four out of five stars. Recommendable! Especially because of the transformation of the character Jane Spofford (Susan Sarandon) simply delicious!

The acting performance of Veronika Cartwright needs to be commended!

Holiday

Der Film "Die Schwester der Braut" von George Cukor aus dem Jahr 1938 mit den Schauspielern Cary Grant und Katherine Hepburn handelt von Johnny Case, der überraschenderweise herausfindet, dass seine neue Flamme Julia Seton Tochter des Multimillionärs Edward Seton ist und von den Überzeugungsversuchen (vor allem durch Julia's Schwester Linda) Johnny als rechtmäßigen Ehemann durch  Edward Seton anerkennen zu lassen. Doch bald offenbaren sich die Unterschiede in Julia's und Johnny's Vorstellungen vom Leben und bleiben auch Edward nicht geheim. Linda hingegen bemerkt ebenfalls Gefühle für Johnny, stellt diese aber selbstlos hinter das geplante Lebensglück des zukünftigen Brautpaars.

Ich habe kein großes Interesse für Schwarz-weiß-Filme, weil oft die Figuren überzeichnet wirken. Dies kommt wahrscheinlich daher, dass vor allem die Theaterkunst vorherrschende Talente prägte und diese Art der Schauspielerei in das Filmbusiness übertragen wurde, welches ja nur über eine Stumm-Film-Geschichte verfügte, wo man angewiesen war auf diese Art von Überzeichnung. Trotzdem haben Schwarzweiß-Filme diesen gewissen Charme, diese Koketterie und Anstandseleganz.
Der Film reiht sich ein in die ersten "sophisticated" Komödien. Obwohl es eher eine seichte "Schmunzödie" darstellt. Wenn überhaupt. Nach heutigen Standards ist das eigentlich keine Komödie.

The film "Holiday" by George Cukor, created in 1938, with the actors Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn is about Johnny Case who surprisingly finds out that his new flame Julia Seton is daughter of multimillionaire Edward Seton. And about the conviction trials towards Edward (mostly by Julia's sister Linda) to acknowledge Johnny as lawful husband. But soon the differences of Julia's and Johnny's ideas of life got disclosed and remain not even Edward a secret. Linda, however, also noted feelings for Johnny, but, selflessly, she waives this behind the planned future of the bride and groom.

I have no great interest in black and white movies, because the figures seems often oversubscribed. This probably comes from the fact that especially theater-art shaped dominant talents and was transferred into the film business, which indeed had only a silent movie history, where you had to rely on this kind of oversubscription. Nevertheless, black and white films have this special charm, this coquetry and noble air-elegance.
The film takes its place in the first "sophisticated" comedies. Although it is more of a shallow "Smirkody". After actual standards not really a comedy.

All that Jazz

Der Film "Hinter dem Rampenlicht" von Bob Fosse aus dem Jahr 1979 handelt von dem Regisseur und Choreographen Joe Gideon, der an überbordenener Selbstdisziplin - sprich Arbeitswut - leidet und an den Folgen seiner neurotischen Untreue gegenüber Frauen. Er nimmt sich zwar selbst in imaginären Gesprächen auf die Schippe, doch erleidet bald körperliche Schäden.
  Der Film gewann 1980 4 Oscars, was ich mir nur damit erklären kann, dass die Jury, wenn es sich um die Reflexion des Film- oder Theaterbusiness in Filmen handelt, dadurch sehr bevorzugt die Oscars vergibt. Ich empfand den Film als eher mittelmäßig bis langweilig, mit Ausnahme der angehaucht pornographischen Vorführung, die wirklich Spannung brachte. Zwei von fünf Punkten.

The movie "All That Jazz" by Bob Fosse from 1979 deals with the director and choreographer Joe Gideon, who suffers of strained self-discipline and has problems to deal with the consequences of his neurotic infidelity towards women. Alltough he takes the mickey out of hisself during imaginary conversations, he soon suffers of physical damage.
  The film won 4 Oscars in 1980, which I can only explain by the fact that the jury - if the movie handles about reflection of the movie- or the theater business - therefore greatly preferred the Oscars awards. I perceived the film as rather mediocre to bland, except for the breathed pornographic performance that really brought tension. Two out of five points.

The Abyss

Der Science-Fiction Film "The Abyss" von James Cameron aus dem Jahr 1989 und mit Ed Harris in einer Hauptrolle handelt von einer U-Boot-Crew, die normalerweise nur nach Öl sucht, doch nun nach Überlebenden eines gesunkenen U-Boots zu suchen hat. Sie müssen zusammen mit einem NAVY-Team arbeiten und bald offenbart sich "der Feind in meinem Boot", der über eine Atomrakete verfügt. Außerdem werden ungeahnte Kreaturen in der absonderlichen und nahezu untauchbaren Tiefe entdeckt. Sehr stark und klaustrophobisch! Auch im Hintergrund des damals vorherrschenden Kalten Krieges hat der Film eine wichtige Botschaft. Gelungen!

The sci-fi movie "The Abyss" by James Cameron created in 1989 and starring Ed Harris in a leading role is about a submarine crew who normally looks only for oil, but is now searching for survivors of a sunken submarine. They must work together with a NAVY team and soon "the enemy in my boat" reaveals, who is in possession of a nuclear missile.  There are also unexpected creatures in the strange and almost undivable depth. Very strong and claustrophobic! Also in the background of the prevailing cold war, the film has an important message. Succeeded!
